HOMEWORK:

Step One: Choose your favorite word (ex: wonderful) and decode it. Use these questions to help you. Create a word association list for it, what does it mean? or what do you want to communicate about it? what is interesting about it?...these will help you define possible behaviors of the word's letterforms.

Step Two: Create a map of all the meanings you find and find your story.

Step Three: Using index cards make two possible scenarios of how you will get from point A back to point A and in the process...reveal the meaning of your word. Due Tomorrow!

Step Four: Choose best scenario and translate it into the computer and AE

HOMEWORK:

Step One: Choose an activity to teach us or show us/ or experience. (ex. a place, how to make a banana split, tie a bow tie etc.) Need help?

Create a word association list for it, what is the mood or appropriate tone for the activity. Fun, pop-like and energetic? or slowly building up steam....choose sound to use with image sequence accordingly and use waveform as a blueprint for time:

Step Two: Research the activity and describe the event by creating a series of "cards" that list the steps and draw pictures to describe the steps. Next create a list of shots you need to shoot to communicate the steps.

Pay close attention to duration (how long each "shot" is). Already think about transitions: jump-cuts, fades, zooms, pans...etc.

Review Eisenstein's Theory of Montage here and here

Step Three: Photoshoot! Best to take more than you need... and save all images (jpegs) in a clearly marked folder for next class. You can always go back and reshoot...so get some images fast so we can start playing.

  • Adjustment layers or instant "Sexy"
Demo 8: (Expressions)
  • Using the Pick Whip tool
  • Time Remapping
  • Altering and Manipulating Expressions
HOMEWORK:

Step Five: Refinements based on feedback
After your initial sequence has taken shape, add sound to your story from (http://ccmixter.orgl), the sound effects folder on the server, and/or Garageband. Re-edit your initial sequence so that there is a conversation between audio and visual. Explore parallel and contrasting sound and visual relationships/structure.

We will have a group crit of your sequence in the last hour of class next class, so be prepared to render a full-size, full-time, full-color, full-sound quicktime movie for the group to look at. MPEG-4 compression, 20 secs, 720x480 file on the server clearly labeled

Individual worktime and one-on-one crits for beginning of class.

We will have a group crit of your sequence in the last hour of class, so be prepared to render a full-size, full-time, full-color, full-sound quicktime movie for the group to look at. MPEG-4 compression, 20 secs, 720x480 file on the server clearly labeled.

  • Review things we missed or forgot
  • Share any new tricks we have discovered
HOMEWORK:

Refinements based on feedback. Investigation Three: Montage Due! beginning of next class! Before next class, turn in files on server (folder with your name on it, inside include a full-size mov 720x480 MPEG compression and a smaller version 360x240 MPEG compression)

Assign Final Project: Putting it All Together, Time, Space, Motion and Sound

Option A: Music Video
Design an interpretation of a piece of music. Your video must be 45 secs-1 minute long. The story/interpretation will be up to you to define, but you must have a communication objective (story) clearly defined to drive your idea and concept of execution.

Option B: Title Sequence
Re-design a title sequence of a film or tv show. It can be one you love or hate, but it must be a movie that you can rent/borrow/buy because you will need access to it for the next few weeks. And there must be a reason (Raison d'ĂȘtre) for it's re-design. Your sequence must be 45 secs-1 minute long. The sequence will be up to you to define message-wise, based on the film you choose, your understanding of the film's theme(s) and anything you might want to learn about the filmaker's intent, but you must include the same credits(text) as the original movie and in the same order...and ALL of them.

For either of the options, you must identify a space in the Art/Design/Marvin Hall buildings to project your sequence on. The choice of the space should reflect your communication goals and create unique opportunities to have the motion graphics and architectural space to converge.

HOMEWORK:
Choose Option A or B for your course project. Choose either the film or the piece of music you design for and be ready to talk about your initials reasons for your selection. Read Hillman Curtis essay and complete the "target methodology" pdf.

Look, find, define, search, appropriate...Create a moodboard that maps the visual theme or big idea of your music video or title sequence. Use found imagery, create your own, but cover a 18x24inch document (pdf or paper). Images, typography, colors, textures, tone-of-voice etc.

Determine where you will project your final! Survey the site and take notes/images of the unique opportunities/parameters. Include on your moodboard.

Individual meetings on your choice of film or music. Be ready to talk about your reasons for your selection. Review the "target methodology" handout you completed and Music Video/Title Sequence moodboard, gather materials, images, graphics etc.

Finalize the site where you will project your video/sequence.

HOMEWORK:
Make Refinements to Music Video/Title Sequence moodboard based on feedback and begin Step Three: Create a storyboard. (digital and/or handmade).
